While we can admit for the most part that 2020 has sucked some serious balls, musically speaking though, and especially for Metalcore, it has rocked pretty hard. With my beloved J-Core making quite the impression in the first several months of this utterly shitty year. First we had heavyweights Crossfaith drop their epic teaser EP Species, and now we have Crystal Lake releasing new music in the form of the two track A side EP Watch Me Burn.
We first brought Crystal Lake to your attention last year, as a part of our Awesome Covers series (which I hope to get going again soon), where they absolutely nailed a Metalcore version of Limp Bizkit's 'Rollin'. The Tokyo based band aren't just known for doing other artists songs though, having dropped five studio albums in their 18 year existence and becoming one of the biggest names in the Japanese scene.
The title track 'Watch Me Burn' is a beautiful tune to listen to if you're a Core fan, it features some amazingly melodic riffs, that mix well with the heavier parts of the song, I'm sure this was written with stadiums full of fans singing along in mind.

While 'Disobey' was created to silence the naysayers who slammed the band after they released 2018's Helix, which was, according to some fans "too soft". 'Disobey' is pure Deathcore goodness and a great contrast to 'Watch Me Burn'.
Watch Me Burn is a great two track EP for a couple of reasons: firstly, as an introductory tool for new fans it is perfect, it showcases the wide range that the band can achieve. Secondly, for the older and more established followers, it gives them either, a little bit of everything that they would like from the band, or that one track they'd prefer.

I can't choose which is the better track... but I am headbanging a shit ton more with 'Disobey'.
Good for both new and old fans.

9/10
