It's been ages since a song worked its way into my brain and refused to leave.
Despite the fact that The Amity Affliction is a huge name in the Metalcore world, I've never really listened to their music before. Sure, I've obviously heard the odd occasional track here and there, but I doubt I knew who they were at the time.
In fact, it wasn't until I spent a few months in Australia and listening almost exclusively to Triple J, that I finally got a knowing taste of The Amity Affliction with their huge single 'Soak Me In Bleach'.
There are three huge reasons as to why this track resonates with me so much:
First off, the lyrics. When you have lines like "When the dreamer dies, so dies the dream, Turn me inside out, soak me in bleach" you know it's not a happy song, but something with meaning that speaks to people.
Secondly, the mash up of the clean and growling vocals, they work fucking well as a duet, it's not a constant battle of who to listen to, but an interwinding of two voices into one stunning message.
The final reason is the music. It's that not too heavy style that complements the vocals, when it does pick up the tempo, it's still just a touch and not over the top. But what really gets the hair on my arms standing, is the piano; it's beautiful and without it 'Soak Me In Bleach' wouldn't have been half as good.
My one point of contention has to be the call to the breakdown, "ROCK", I find it a bit lazy for a Metalcore band, I much prefer a guttural "Blegh", but what follows more than makes up for this one little annoyance.
As I mentioned at the beginning, It's only now that I've got into The Amity Affliction, and I regret that, but at the same time feel glad that it was a beautiful track like 'Soak Me In Bleach' that was the gateway.
Because of this haunting and dark little tune, I'm more than happy to find the time to not only check out their new album Everyone Loves You... Once You Leave Them, but their entire catalogue.
