Track of the Week: 'Shinjuku' by Prey Drive

Back in 2018 I found my summer album with Once More With Feeling, in 2020 I've got my quarantine track with 'Shinjuku'.

"While the musical side of 'Shinjuku' feels like a bit of a downer, it's the lyrics that are truely uplifting, even if some times they don't sound like it."

I was more than a little curious how Prey Drive could top the epic effort that was their debut album Once More With Feeling. But silly me had nothing to worry about since the four lads from Norwich, United Kingdom, have everything under control with their new single 'Shinjuku'.

Like a lot of people around the world, I suffer from a mild form of depression, it comes and goes, but when it hits, I'm next to useless as my mind is just scattered in the wind. But one of my major coping mechanisms is music, and 'Shinjuku' has earned its place in my playlist.

"It can’t rain all the time/ You know, yeah you know/ Glow like Tokyo in the night/ Like you always do/
Its brighter outside/ I’m turning in circles all the time/ Yeah I’ve been spinning around/
While you walk in a straight line"

'Shinjuku' starts with this sense of urgency, like it's trying hard to get your attention, so you'll hear its message, then it mellows out. While the musical side of 'Shinjuku' feels like a bit of a downer, it's the lyrics that are truely uplifting, even if some times they don't sound like it.

Prey Drive were awarded extra points (not that they needed them), for taking a line from one of my favourite movies and making it the main focus of the chorus, "can't rain all the time" is of course taken from The Crow, with the band explaining they "took this as a metaphor for meaning no matter how much shit life throws at you, there will be some light at the end of it. I thought this was a hopeful and optimistic look on life and a good message to not give up".

Truer words have never been said, thank you Prey Drive for 'Shinjuku'.

9/10
