The best advert YouTube could have showed me.
I listen to a lot of music, "obviously!" I hear you all screaming into your screens at once, but I really do. I have whatever I am reviewing at the time on constant loop, and when I'm working on other things, I've got either Spotify or YouTube on random trying to discover something new, which is what happened the other day when I first heard the German band Half Me and their second single 'Livebait'.
I was uploading some of our old reviews onto the site, randomly clicking on YouTube videos of tracks to keep me going. I went with an older Asking Alexandria tune, something off The Black, and when it started I thought "I don't remember it being THIS heavy..." flicking back I found an advert playing before the actual song, and it was 'Livebait'.
The amount of passion that the band has injected into 'Livebait' is immense, which is great to see and helps set Half Me apart from all the other groups in the genre. Evidence of this can be seen in the way they utilise half way vocals, not quite clean, but also not full blown growls, allowing the lyrics to be understood, but still with their sense of apprehension left intact.
While musically they've found a tone that matches up perfectly with what singer Chris Zuehlke is laying down, stunning jarring distorted riffs that link up and work hand in hand with the bass, and the kind of drumming that you feel in the pit of your stomach. But despite the overall vibe of 'Livebait', it's still full of an energy that makes you want to move - violently.
I decided to check out Half Me's other track 'Firewalk' and expected a similar styled tune, only to be pleasantly surprised to find something completely different, but equally awesome; think more Nu-Metalcore.
It's not often that a band with only two tracks on both Spotify and YouTube excite me so much, but this young German act has done just that, and after a quick Q&A through Facebook, they told me there is a lot more on the way.
