Can anything stop this young band? I think not.Eighteen months ago I reviewed Thornhill's second EP Butterfly, and at the end I said "The sky’s the limit boys, go for it". Now I don't know if they actually read that or not (I hope they did, but doubt it... let me know dudes!), but with The Dark Pool they've definitely aimed high, and hit their mark.
The Dark Pool shifts just a bit from Butterfly, with the Melbourne based band really playing around with their sound. But have no fear, Dark Pool is still squarely in the Metalcore genre, as is Thornhill, for now at least.
“We wanted the album to be the perfect follow up to Butterfly, and yet the perfect way to lead us into our next album in the future. We wanted it to have enough difference that people would be surprised, but that it would also allow us to keep branching out down the track. We never want to pigeon hole ourselves into a genre" Lead vocalist Jacob Charlton explained in the lead up to The Dark Pool.
As I said, don't expect a longer version of Butterfly, but also don't think you're getting a completely new band either. The riffs are still there and kick arse, the lyrics are a perfect mix of scream and clean and let's cut the chase, The Dark Pool is totally worth your time.
Of course the whole record is top shelf and I can't recommend it enough, but if you still need convincing, you need to check out the tracks:
The Dark Pool is an amazing debut full length album that confirms what I had already expected, that this band is heading places, and fast.
