Finally, a superhero movie that lives up to the hype.

When looking back on the vast amount of Superhero movies that have been released in the last few years, I can't remember many that really were quite good. Don't get me started on Justice League or the mind-numbingly boring Avengers series.
The last REAL good superhero flick would have to be Deadpool, and that was a damn Comedy! So, when the trailer for Venom was released, even after viewing it, I had low expectations – and that was a good thing because this Tom Hardy driven feature is very, very entertaining.
Based on the character from the Marvel universe, Venom tells the story of an investigative journalist named Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), who after breaking into the controversial Life Foundation, where CEO Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) has been experimenting with symbiotic life forms on humans, becomes Venom after the symbiote attaches itself to Eddie. ![]()
Do not listen to the stupid negative reviews by critics or hipster people, this is a movie worth your time. I read the comments from some, and it's like they were expecting an Oscar winner or something!!
The story made perfect sense, I didn't need to think too much. The action scenes are well crafted, and the CGI is quite good. Was it too comedic? Maybe, but that I didn't mind. Not everything has to be moody and emotional – remember Man of Steel? I wish I didn’t!! ![]()
The performances on a whole were good. It doesn't hurt when you have the acting leverage of Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Riz Ahmed on display.
Michelle Williams is her usual great. She doesn’t do too many commercially driven films but when she does, it’s great she picks the right ones. Riz Ahmed, who is best known for Nightcrawler and The Night Of, plays the villain and what a dick he is. Those evil scientist guys are always dickheads, aren’t they? Is this Tom Hardy's best ever performance? No, but that's not what we were expecting, any other actor wouldn't have suited the role as well as Tom Hardy and he actually does the voice of Venom too, ah yes – Venom!! Brilliant.
Venom was so enjoyable to watch, it didn't matter that the violence was on a PG-13 level because when you don't have Tom Hardy, you have his alter ego and that voice of his, not to mention he is funny as hell!!
As for the director Ruben Fleischer, this is a guy who made Zombieland and Gangster Squad – he knows his popcorn flicks and how to entertain the people. Oh, and he is doing the Zombieland sequel next, woohoo!! Do yourself a favour, leave your brain at the door and go watch this. It’s entertaining enough for everyone to enjoy.
