Remember King 810? The 4 piece out of Flint Michigan who’s first album Memoirs of a Murderer I covered in April? Well, they’re back with their second musical offering La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God that continues the brutal sound and message of life in Flint, but it also branches out with King trying new styles to much success.

Gunn released the statement suggesting they’d “never make the same move twice and we’re always creating” La Petite Mort proves that King 810 ain’t talking shit and are true to their words.

Back in July, King 810 released the first single ‘I Ain’t Going Back Again’ on the BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show and within minutes the comments started, “where’s the metal?” “Soft as shit” and so on. While yes, ‘I Ain’t Going Back Again’ isn’t heavy metal, it is deep on the emotional front, flowing straight from Gunn’s and the rest of the band’s heart. This song sent chills down my spine when I first heard how they grew up as kids and the rest of La Petite Mort more than makes up for this emotional powerhouse.

‘Alpha & Omega’ just plain kicks arse, it’s the blood pumper, balls to the wall and every other cliché that I know, it’s full of aggression (but to be fair so is the entire album) and while not the opener really sets the tone for the rest of La Petite Mort.

La Petite Mort is a massive step up from King with more than a couple of experimental tracks that are stunning, such as the beautiful ‘Black Swan’ with its string arrangement like backing and acoustic start before building up to an amazing climax, I’m going to classify this as one of the softer tunes but still one of the highlights of this album.

Another track I need to mention is ‘War Time’ featuring Trick Trick, just like the rest of La Petite Mort, the subject is the cold hard streets of Flint, the difference here is its ghetto poetry and fellow Michigan native rapper, while I no longer really enjoy Hip Hop, ‘War Time’ is a killer song that brings the two genres of Rap and Metal together.

I have to talk about one last song before I sum up, ‘Me & Maxine’, this one caught me off guard, it opens with piano and has a massive lounge jazz feel to it, but really shows there is no stopping King’s creativity and ability to make something that shouldn’t work fit perfectly with the album's structure. Is there anything this band can’t do?

I’ve loved the dirty and gritty music of King 810 ever since fellow reviewer Norman really stressed to me how awesome they are. I really got into Memoirs of a Murderer and wondered how they were going to top that record. After hearing ‘I Ain’t Going Back Again’ on its debut on the Rock Show I knew they were more than a one album band that would roll back into obscurity.

La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God ticks all the boxes: more of the same heavy shit that won them their legions of fans? Check. Something new to keep them from getting stale? Check. Bleeding their hearts and souls into an album for the whole world to see and hear? Damn right they have.

Memoirs of a Murderer converted me, La Petite Mort or a Conversation with God cemented me as a lifelong fan of this truly fucking amazeballs band.
9/10

Just "up the road" from Flint Michigan, Northwest Division's Orange & Black is another amazing sophomore album.

Of course we were going to mention King 810's first awesome album Memoirs of a Murderer.

La Petite Mort as well as their previous album have quite strong Hip Hop influences, so here are the masters of the west coast NWA and their EFIL4ZAGGIN.
