Ronon's Reviews is a small independent music website where we, only four of us active at the moment, cover talented up and coming artists and bands (not to mention all the work the behind the scenes!), and while we'd absolutely LOVE to review and/or interview each one that we get excited about, we have a difficult time squeezing everybody in... Enter this new column!
We might not have the time to do a full blown piece on everybody, but we sure can share with you, once a month, the 10 musicians we find worthy of being noticed by the whole wide world!
Japan is an untapped mine of musical gold and my latest find is no exception.
It's no secret that I love my J-Core, you guys see it almost every week, but I can't help if the bands of this genre kick some serious arse. Meet MAKE MY DAY, a Japanese Metalcore, Post-Hardcore and to some degrees, Nu-Metalcore (though some people call it Trancecore) act out of Tokyo, who prior to the Coronavirus outbreak were heading for a massive year.
They dropped their second full length album Mind Haven on the 29th of January before announcing a pretty sizeable tour in support of it, sadly that all went to shit, which is a massive shame for the world.
Who is Periphery?
Periphery is a Progressive Metal band that formed in 2005 in Washington, D.C. Periphery have put out 5 albums before Periphery IV: Hail Stan (math is hard). Periphery left their previous label, Sumerian Records, and started their own record label, 3DOT Recordings, for Periphery IV: Hail Stan.
Who is Devin Townsend?
Devin Townsend is a Canadian musician focusing on Heavy Metal and Prog music. Devin founded the band Strapping Young Lad, performed lead vocals for Steve Vai, and released more than 23 albums from all his musical endeavors. Devin’s time with Steve Vai opened his eyes to the music industry, and Devin was not a huge fan. Devin felt as if he was being used and was a product of another’s imagination. Perhaps this is why all of his original works are so out of this world and unique.
Who is Northlane?
Northlane is a Metal band from Sydney, Australia which formed in 2009. They have four full length albums (Discoveries, Singularity, Node, Mesmer). Jordan and I will take a deep dive into their sophomore album, Singularity, which was released in 2013. One thing to note is that the members of the band have changed over the years. The biggest change would be the original vocalist, Adrian Fitipaldes, left in 2014.
