I haven't been this excited for an album/EP in years.
As promised in my last review, this week is all about Courtesans’ newest EP Better Safe Than Sober, which saw the light of day this time last year and after hearing parts of it live not that long ago, I’m kicking myself for not discovering this band earlier. Hailing from jolly ol London Town, Courtesans are an all female Doom-Pop Indie band that has created a sizeable cult following mainly due to their amazing performances and I have to say, it's well deserved.
The only problem with Better Safe Than Sober is its length, it’s only 5 tracks long, other than that this release is pure gold. The EP kicks things off with ‘Knowhere’, a song that has a great Grunge feel that takes me back, a fine opener. Next up is ‘Feel The Same’ which shares favourite tune on Better Safe Than Sober with one other, this one is heavy on the emotional front lyrically and I love the chorus and bridge, I could listen to this on repeat forever.
‘John Doe’ follows and it slows things down a bit but doesn’t lack any of the intensity of the rest of the EP, the guitar work here is amazing. The other contender for top track is the truly brilliant ‘Mesmerise’ and it does just that, the whole way through you will lose yourself to this song and the bridge is again, perfection. ‘The Tide’ finishes things off and picks up a bit more of a Grungy Rock feel from before, the spoken word lyrics make this tune work even better.
I’ve already seen these ladies live and they blew my mind, this is their second release and have proved themselves masters of their craft, I wonder what the first EP 1917 sounds like... I'll have to check that out soon.
I look forward to both their next show that I happen to make and whatever project they follow this up, with talent like this, you know it will be fucking amazeballs.
Here is 'Feel The Same', make sure you check out 'Mesmerise' too.
