Today we welcome Stone Sour into our Awesome Covers series.
Stone Sour and Corey Taylor are known for their fondness of covers, the latter even does his own acoustic shows chocked full of them. So it should come as no surprise that Stone Sour added the iconic track 'Wicked Game', to their special edition release of Come What(ever) May.
Stone Sour's version of 'Wicked Game' isn't too different from Chris Isaak's original, both are guitar driven ballads, with only the barest of minimums in the background, but Stone Sour's takes it even further, with what sounds like just the two acoustic guitars and Taylor crooning the lyrics perfectly.
And after a brief poke around the internet, it turns out Stone Sour still include 'Wicked Game' on their set lists, meaning the track must be a favourite of the band, or something they know the crowds will lose their shit when they hear it.
This was the song that cemented Corey Taylor as a vocal-god for me. His work with Slipknot is impressive as hell, while Stone Sour's main stay tracks proved he wasn't just locked in the one genre, but with 'Wicked Game' he showed the world that he could actually sing... and fucking well.
I think a lot of fans will remember the initial feeling of being blown away when they first heard Stone Sour's 'Wicked Game'. I know I still do.
