So I went into my secret Amazing Covers playlist on Spotify, hit random, skipped twice and this absolute banger came up.
I first discovered Crystal Lake when I was researching J-Core last year, and this one track always stood out for how well it transitions from Nu-Metal to Metalcore, I am of course talking about Limp Bizkit's 'Rollin' as done by Crystal Lake.
When I first heard the original 'Rollin', I honestly never thought of it ever being covered, like seriously ever..! but here we, and to be honest, the boys from Japan totally kill it and in some ways, make it their own.
Besides Crystal Lake having turned up the aggressive factor to 11 and switching the genre to Metalcore, they haven't twisted the song in any other way, which was probably the best direction to go in with this cover. 'Rolin' is an iconic track from Limp Bizkit, and I feel that if Crystal Lake had gone too far with it, their version of 'Rollin' wouldn't have been too well received from fans of both bands.
But thats not to say that Crystal Lake have played it safe with 'Rollin'. In fact I think it was a bold choice, to take a massive hit from a well known group, splash their own bit of flavour all over it and use it to promote themselves, who wouldn't be even a little bit interested in hearing a J-Core take this?
And it worked, Crystal Lake's 'Rollin' is still featuring in many J-Core, Metalcore and hell, even in a couple of Nu-Metal playlists on music streaming services, despite being released 5 years ago, the mark of a truly great cover!
