Finally we get to the reason why I started this series.
To me, this is one of, if not the greatest cover of all time and the main reason I started this whole series. It's the song I use to convince people that covers can be amazing, and it's also the tune I play to Hip Hop fans to show them Metal and Metalcore. May I please introduce, Sharks In Your Mouth's version of Eminem's 'Lose Yourself'.
Sharks kept the intro intact, which is so iconic you know what song is about to blast your ears, but when Andy starts singing the opening lyrics it's clear something is different, but at the same time, it has the identical feel as the Eminem original: "this is my last chance, I can't fuck this up".
Not that this was Sharks In Your Mouth's last chance, far from it. They've been working their arses off for years to build an almost cult like following, and for good reason too, just listen to the albums Promises or Sacrilegious and you'll know they're a bunch of talented musicians.
But 'Lose Yourself' was the next level for the Italian group, it got plenty of notice in music publications around the world and the band's stock began to rise.
As for the track itself, it features one of the best and dirtiest drops in all Metalcore, it has to have broken necks of fans caught off guard (you'll find it around the 1:18 mark of the video above), and that's only the beginning; the rest of the song keeps the fast paced and hard hitting tempo and never lets up.
While this wasn't the track to got me into Sharks In Your Mouth to begin with, it did help cement them as a one of my favourite bands. I first discovered them with another cover (which will feature at some point in the future) and when I checked out their debut record I was pretty impressed and more than happy to keep an eye out for some new music.
But when they went with Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' as a in-between albums treat, I was bowled over by what I'd heard, it was love at first listen and I signed up to the Covenant, care to join us?
