Two of my favourite things, Gaming and Metalcore, coming together perfectly!

A friend of mine, who I never would have pegged as a Metalfan, recently ousted herself to me by revealing her love of Sharks In Your Mouth’s last album Sacrilegious, recommended to me the American Metalcore band August Burns Red, a group that I was only familiar of by name.

But after checking out a few tracks I was pleased with what I heard and was happy to dig a little deeper into their discography, I’m glad I did, otherwise I wouldn’t have found this gem.
Led by bassist Dustin Davidson, August Burns Red totally nail ‘Legend Of Zelda’ which is not just the famous theme, but also includes bits from the game too, as explained by Davidson “For the cover, I wanted to do a mashup of not only the original theme but other pieces from the game as well. And since the dungeon theme flirts with the diminished scale, it just made sense to put it into a metal cover. It was a lot of fun to write and record and I look forward to playing in on future tours!”.

As for the actual track, ‘Legend of Zelda’ is a purely instrumental Metalcore piece, as lyrics would have been totally out of place and unnecessary. The guitars take centre stage and are perfectly divine to listen to as is the super intense drumming. The end result is less of a band doing a cover, but more of a bunch of massive fans performing a love letter to one of their favourite gaming franchises, and we get the privilege of hearing it.

‘Legend Of Zelda’ featured on ABR’s EP Phantom Sessions, which came out back in February of this year, which I haven't had a chance to check out, though something tells me that might be changing soon.

Thanks again for the recommendation Liz!
