A modern day classic cover.
Today's cover is a relatively new one, having only been played for the first time February 14th 2019, on the Australian alternative radio station triple j's segment Like A Version, where many future covers will come from. But today we're shining the spotlight on the powerful 'Bulls on Parade' by Denzel Curry.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with triple j and Like A Version, under normal circumstances a band or artist goes into the Sydney studio to perform two songs live on air, one original and a cover of their choosing. I don't know what went through the Florida based rapper's mind when he picked Rage Against The Machine's 'Bulls on Parade' but I'm sure as shit, glad he did.
Now I'll freely admit, I'm not much of a Hip Hop fan anymore, and barely know who is who, let alone their general sound. So I don't know if Denzel Curry is usually this full of fury, but it works perfectly with his rendition of 'Bulls on Parade', the track is normally angry, but Curry pushes it to a whole new level.
Lyrically, Curry stays true, with the exception of a quick fire free style verse where he attacks Trump, genocide and religion just before the the song's iconic bridge. While this is quintessentially Curry's cover, the backing band (which includes iconic Australian multi-instrumentalist Harts) deserve a massive round of applause, they never miss a beat and really turn up the energy, which makes this pretty awesome cover into a certified fucking banger.
And I'm not the only one who loves Curry's version of 'Bulls on Parade', in the recent triple j Hottest 100, where listeners vote for their favourite tracks of the previous year, it reached the lofty position of number 5, the highest a Like A Version has ever placed, though personally I thought it was robbed and should have been in the top 2 (and yes I did vote).
For a short spell Curry even performed the cover live, but unfortunately it was a huge strain on this throat and had to stop doing it, though I've heard he still drops it from time to time while on tour.
