Coronavirus needs to fuck off so I can see these girls and guys live!
It was only in the later stages of last year that I realised that Billie Eilish had taken over the world, and if I had any doubts, they were gone once she won triple j's Hottest 100 with 'Bad Guy'. I can't deny it's a catchy tune, but as usual, I've found a better version, this time from the Spanish based band: Ankor.
Ankor is an Alternative Metal band, with an English frontwoman (Jessie Williams), two Spanish guitarists/backup singers (David Romeu and Fito Martinez) and a Brazilian drummer (Ra Tache), they certainly have all the hallmarks of an international group.
They've dropped 6 full lengths during their career so far, but they like to release covers in between albums for a bit of fun, and one of my favourites is 'Bad Guy'. When I'm listening to a song, I will either love it straight away (thanks to an amazing opening), or there will be a certain moment during the track that elevates it in my mind; Ankor's version of 'Bad Guy' is a case of the latter.
Don't misunderstand me and think the song is only good because of that one moment, the whole track is done amazingly well, the Metal version of the riffs sound epic and Jessie's vocals mimic the mumble style but with a lot more clarity.
So in that first minute, your bopping your head, enjoying it, but not loving it, thinking "more Rock than Metal, but it's alright" then the chorus hits, or more to the point the second "duh". Jessie drops the first like Billie, but within a split second hits us with another that is more growled than sung, that's the moment I knew this was a winner. Ankor even include the strange ending of 'Bad Guy', but went with a Doom Metal vibe and it's better than the original.
While Ankor's version of 'Bad Guy' can come across a bit Alternative Rock instead of Metal for some people, it doesn't take away from the fact, it is an amazing cover that deserves to be heard. To a lot of us, it's the better version.
