Anyone else feel the need for speed?![]()
We first reported that a follow on to Top Gun was in the works awhile ago in one of our now defunct Triple R's, and at the time I wasn't all that excited at the prospect of a 33 year old sequel.
Well, all that changed with the trailer that Tom Cruise surprised San Diego Comic Convention with yesterday. While to me, the teaser shows next to nothing of the film's plot, it still looks amazing as hell with its flight sequences (which have been reported to be real and not CGI), a slowed down score from the original and the casting of John Hamm and Ed Harris. While Tom himself looks like he's barely aged a day. ![]()
I am a product of the 80's, and was a massive fan of the original film, when I was young and thought I was half decent at flying video games, I went by the nickname of Maverick from a few friends (though only one still uses it these days). But in the last few years I've become a bit disillusioned with my memory of Top Gun: was it a Navy recruitment video posing as a Hollywood film? did we really need that beach volleyball scene? and how did a dude like Maverick not get his ass throw out of the Navy?
But despite all that, I am actually quite excited for this new film, not "I am so seeing this opening night at the cinema", but more "I can't wait till this is on Netflix or TV". It reminded me of that childhood fandom that I once had, damn you Hollywood banking on our nostalgia yet again!
