Most Anticipated Horror Movies of 2020

Me and Horror have a bit of love/ hate relationship. Horror has been my favourite genre since I was a child, but while I used to be amused by pretty much anything spooky, now I need something that’s a bit more than just cheap jump-scares and a creepy villain. Unfortunately something that isn't a total cliché is a bit harder to come across these days, but those type of flicks do exist friends, I promise you!

A Quiet Place: Part II
Directed by: John Krasinski

Picture

A Quiet Place was one of the best things to come out in 2018, literally had us holding our breath for 91 minutes, and since John Krasinski is back behind the camera (couldn’t come back in front of it for obvious reasons), I have faith he will have something as gripping for us in store. Returning is Emily Blunt and her on screen surviving children, in addition to Cllian Murphy (bad guy alert), Djimon Hounslow (Shazam!) and Wayne Duvall (The Kitchen).

Expected Release: March

Last Night In Soho
Directed by: Edgar Wright

Picture

Psychological Horror penned by Wright and Penny Dreadful's Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The plot seems a bit silly, but I trust the Baby Driver director to have another winner in his hands: a young fashion designer somehow manages to enter the world of 1960s London, and things aren’t all miniskirts and go-go boots as she might have expected. I believe the soundtrack will be phenomenal, and also the cast is pretty exciting: Anya Taylor-Joy (The VVitch, Split, Glass), Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown), Thomasin McKenzie (JoJo Rabbit) and badass ex Game Of Thrones actress Diana Rig AKA Olenna Tyrell.

Expected Release: September

The Invisible Man
Directed by: Leigh Whannell

Picture

Written and directed by the man that brought us Upgrade and he also is one of the fathers of the Saw franchise, starring The Handmaiden Tale and Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss. That is enough for me to watch it without asking any more questions, but here’s the plot, just for you: a woman thinks her abusive husband faked his own death and feels haunted by someone no one else can see.

Expected Release: February

The Grudge
Directed by: Nicolas Pesce

Picture

Ok, bare with me for this one. I was originally very into the original Japanese Ju-On as much as the American adaptation starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, but I didn’t see all of the prequels, sequels and what have you, and I've lost all interest in the franchise, but this movie had me excited again for one simple reason… The Grudge is directed by the dude behind The Eyes Of My Mother a weird ass Horror half in Portuguese, half in English but 100% certified strange. Will this live up to Pesce's first effort? Going by the trailer we might have a good chance.

Expected Release: January

Saint Maud
Directed by: Rose Glass

Picture

I am a simple woman, if I see a movie distributed by A24 I’ll watch it. And coincidentally this one is. Plot: Maud is an unstable nurse that becomes convinced she needs to save the soul of the dying lady she is looking after in an isolated seaside town. Yea baby!

Expected Release: May

The Turning
Directed by: Floria Sigismondi

Picture

Adapted from 1898 novella The Turn Of The Screw that also was the inspiration for (spoiler alert?) The Others, this film is about a nanny unveiling disturbing secrets while taking care of two orphans in a haunted mansion. All the creepy premises are there plus it's starring everybody favourite nerdy looking teenager Finn Wolfard (Stranger Things, It), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project) and Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Faith, Blade Runner 2049).

Expected Release: January

The Organ Donor
Directed by: Darren Lynn Bousman

Picture

I’m a sucker for all Saw films and this ninth instalment should be as good as any other, because honestly I don’t even care about the plot, I just want to see people trying to escape traps impossible to get out of and dying in the weirdest ways. The cast this time is pretty interesting though, as Samuel L. Jackson will star, together with Chris Rock, the latter is also an executive producer and wrote the story this film is based off.

Expected Release: May

Candyman
Directed by: Nia DaCosta

Picture

…and produced by Horror darling Jordan Peele - he’s the only reason I have this film on my radar. Somehow I haven’t seen the original flick, but I’m one of the few people that want to leave the legends enjoy their retirement (I’m referring to you lot that want Robert Englund to play Freddy Krueger again! Uuughhh!!!), so the fact that they got 65 year old Tony Todd to come back, doesn’t really do anything for me, quite the contrary. Also starring: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen), Teyonah Parris (Dear White People, Chi-Raq) and Colman Domingo (Fear The Walking Dead, Selma).

Expected Release: June
*** No trailer available at the moment***

The Purge 5
Directed by: Everardo Gout

Picture

Hands down one of my favourite recent franchises, for the 5th entry we don’t have too many certainties but looks like this film will be the last of the series (I know, I know, that have been saying that for a few years now) and the plot will follow a heist made on Purge night. Starring Ana de la Reguera (Narcos) and written by creator James DeMonaco.

Expected Release: July
*** No trailer available at the moment***

Malignant
Directed by: James Wan

Picture

James Wan films are a bit hit and miss for me, for every Dead Silence there is an Insidious and for every first Conjuring there are a bunch of disappointing sequels and spinoffs, but I still feel I should give the man that invented the Saw franchise a chance. Malignant is based on his graphic novel The Malignant Man, there isn’t an official plot synopsis yet, what we do have is an idea on the cast: Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle, The Mummy) and Jake Abel (Supernatural, The Host) amongst others.

Expected Release: August

I feel like this Mike Myers/ Laurie Strode relationship is a bit of a will-they-or-won't-they kinda thing at this point.

We can only hope there will be something as good as Hereditary coming out in 2020.
