Just because we're in the middle of a pandemic doesn't mean we can't interview new bands, in fact I feel it's one of the best times: we need to keep the spotlight on the little guys.

With that said, I'd like to introduce you to the Milan based Atwood, who just last month dropped their latest single 'Ghost'.

Dan: Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to do this, let's get stuck straight in with the name of your band and the origin behind it...
Atwood: Our name’s Atwood. If you’ve ever watched The O.C., Atwood might remind you of Ryan.

D: Ah, of course. For the record, could you please list the name, and respective instrument of each member?
A: Alice: vocals, Daniele: guitar. We write drums and bass ourselves

D: And what genre of music do you consider your work to be, and who are your major influences?
A: We make Alternative Rock blended with Pop and Electronic elements. Our major influences are Pvris, Billie Eilish, BMTH.

D: Interesting choices, I can definitely hear a bit of Billie in your music. So, how long have you known each other and how did you meet?
A: We’ve known each other for a couple of years now, and we actually met online! We were looking for band members, and now here we are.

D: Internet for the win! Speaking of which, how do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
A: It has its pros and cons. On the one hand, everybody has a platform to showcase their music; on the other hand, there is way more music than before. So emerging is a lot more difficult, obviously. In addition, it’s become essential to develop good branding and band image, and that is definitely not easy.

D: It truly is the proverbial double edged sword. Moving on, what can you tell me about your equipment?
A: Alice has 2 mics (Shure sm58 and Sennheiser e945), which she switches depending on the situation. Daniele’s guitar is custom made by a luthier he’s been collaborating for quite some time with. We’re very happy with our gear at the moment!

D: Awesome, so who writes your songs and what are the main themes? Do you think these topics will change over time?
A: Usually Daniele lays down the main structure of the song, and then Alice will add her suggestions, and of course lyrics and vocals. We work together on every detail until we’re happy with the result, and it usually takes quite some time. As for the themes, they vary, but the recurring theme is the constant search for freedom, be it from other people’s constraints or from our own. If they will change over time… Possibly, depending on how life evolves! Alice takes a lot of inspiration from her own experiences.

D: All great musicians do, don't they? Continuing with this train of thought, how has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
A: We started off as your usual Rock/Metal band, but then we decided to incorporate a few more elements taken from Pop and Electronic because they allow us to experiment with textures a bit more.

D: It would also help to stand out in the crowd, so what are you currently working on? And can you tell us about it?
A: We’re currently working on an official video (out very soon), and on new music of course! We never stop writing new stuff. No spoilers though!

D: Keeping you cards close your chest, eh? fair enough. What does the future hold for you guys?
A: Well, the future is uncertain at the moment, but our plan is to get to play as many shows as possible. We miss the stage A LOT.

D: Just as much as we miss gigs, in that case what do you prefer, playing live or recording in studios?
A: Playing live. No doubt.

D: In that case, what is the craziest thing a fan has ever done?
A: It’s not a crazy thing, it’s just super cute: we’ve had a couple of people ask for autographs, and I think you can imagine how happy and appreciated we felt.

D: And what is your favourite song to perform live?
A: Probably 'Dance in the sun', because it’s super energetic and fun.

D: I checked out the video just before this interview, I could see that going off live, so who would you most like to collaborate with?
A: Billie Eilish. She’s a real force of nature.

D: Agreed, I'm mainly a Metalhead, but even I can appreciate her music, in that case if you could open for any artist/band in the world who would it be?
A: Lady Gaga! She’s incredibly inspirational – her music is great, the messages she delivers are deep and meaningful, and she’s super eclectic. A real all rounded artist.

D: Not who I would of thought but an interesting choice. Now for a bit of fun. Who used to sing in the shower and what songs?
A: Alice – attempts “Love on top” by Beyoncé, obviously failing.
Daniele – “More than a feeling” by Boston

D: Awesome, I may have busted out 'More Than a Feeling' myself... If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing instead?
A: Alice would be a makeup artist and Daniele an event planner.

D: Ok, How about one of your favourite albums.
A: Alice – A Flash Flood of Colour by Enter Shikari;
Daniele –
Dissonants by Hands Like Houses.

D: A bit of Aussie love with Hands Like Houses, and Enter Shikari never fail to impress.
For each of you: who was the first and last gig you saw?

A: Alice – Destrage 1st, Thy Art Is Murder + guests last; Daniele – can’t recall 1st, Hands Like Houses last.

D: Pretty sweet bunch of bands right there, I love a good cover and want to know what is the best cover you’ve ever heard?
A: Does our own cover of Billie Eilish’s 'Bury A Friend' count? ;).

D: I actually didn't know you did that, I just checked it out and of course it does! Final "fun question", you’ve just been signed to do a massive worldwide tour, what two bands are you inviting to open for you?
A: Pvris and Enter Shikari. They’re music geniuses and great entertainers.

D: That they are, and I'd pay good money to see that concert.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?

A: “In the music industry, perseverance is key.” This is so true.
Picture
D: [Nods] And what advice do you have for people who want to form their own band?
A: Do it. Don’t be afraid of interacting with fellow musicians, it’s a great way to grow! And if a specific band ends up in nothing... Just set up another one! If this is what you want to do, never let anyone stop you.

D: I love it! If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?  A: We would love for it to be a bit more genuine.

D: That would be a great change, So how can fans-to-be gain access to your music and social media?
A: We have our own website, www.atwoodofficial.com, where you can access our social media and merch store. We’re on Facebook, IG, Twitter, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Reverbnation, Apple Music, iTunes… You can find us literally anywhere!

D: You need to be these days... Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering financial and/ or emotional support?
A: We have a great network of friends who’ve always supported us, and believed in us. It’s really wholesome.

D: Awesome, well that's it, any last words?
A: Thank you so much for your time, we really appreciate the effort you put into coming up with these questions!
Thank you guys, I'm looking forward to the lockdown being lifted, so I can come up to Milan and check out your live game, or you could even come down to Liguria...
